New geological map 1:200.000 of the border area of the Pyrite Belt is presented
A new geological map 1:200.000 of the border area of the Pyrite Belt is presented.
14th November 2019

The products obtained in this project include the new 1:200,000 geological map of the border area in this mining region, the 1:400,000 maps of mineral resources and mining potential of this area, which covers an area of about 250 km long, between Seville and southern Lisbon and a variable width, around 40 km.

In addition, a protocol for the harmonisation and development of the information from Peñarroya (IGME) and Aljustrel (LNEG) core repositories, which has made it possible to create a consolidated database with information from both infrastructures on the Pyrite Belt.

IGME leads the GEO_FPI project to improve the knowledge about the Iberian Pyrite Belt
06/26/2017

The Iberian Pyrite Belt (FPI) is one of the most important metallogenetic provinces in the world and extends between Spain and Portugal.

The partnership that will execute the project is composed of the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME), the General Directorate of Energy and Mines Industry of the Ministry of Employment, Enterprise and Commerce of the Junta de Andalucía, the National Energy and Geology Laboratory (LNEG) and the Municipal Chamber of Aljustrel (CMA).

It is a European project of territorial cooperation between Spain and Portugal co-financed with FEDER funds (INTERREG-POCTEP).

This initiative will promote the creation of a network of public consultation about the Iberian Pyrite Belt, with generation of continuous and harmonized geological mapping of the cross-border area to E. 1: 200,000 and promotion of the scientific-technical activity of the IGME and LNEG core repositories.
